What it’s built for
The listing leads with print, copy, scan, automatic two-sided printing, a separate photo tray and an auto document feeder, with a large color touchscreen. HP quotes up to 10 pages a minute in color and 15 in black. It’s a general-purpose machine first.
Four inks, not six
The ink list on the listing is black, cyan, magenta and yellow. The photo-first printers here use six or more channels, including lighter cyan and magenta or gray, which is what keeps skin tones and skies smooth. For snapshots and school projects, four is fine. For frames and gifts, the XP-8700 or a photo tank is a safer bet.

The listing includes a three-month Instant Ink trial. After that, a monthly fee applies unless you cancel. Instant Ink can be good value for steady printing and a trap for people who forget to cancel.
