Why dye-sub is the right tool for 4x6

Dye-sublimation lays three color layers and an overcoat onto paper, one pass each. Prints come out dry, water resistant and sealed. There’s no nozzle to clog, so the machine works after a month in a drawer. That’s the whole argument against buying a photo inkjet for 4 x 6 work.

Everything a phone needs

Wi-Fi, a USB port, memory card slots and a 3.5-inch display that previews and applies simple filters. Canon’s SELPHY Photo Layout app on the listing is described as updated to v3.0 with a Siri shortcut on iOS. An optional battery pack on the listing makes it portable.

Cost per print, from real kits

Canon’s KP-108IN kit (108 sheets with ink) was priced at roughly 49 cents a print on the day I pulled data, and the two-pack worked out to about 36 cents. Roughly 40 cents is a fair planning number. That’s more than a tank, less than instant film, and you’re buying fixed-size packs, so you can’t bargain-hunt for paper.

The KP-108IN family is a matched ink cassette and 108 sheets. Canon also sells a two-pack. The version I feature is white; a black version and a black bundle with an RP-108 high-capacity kit are both listed. Match the kit to the printer before buying.

Portable with an add-on

With the optional battery pack Canon mentions on the listing, it travels well enough for a wedding table or a family reunion.

What it costs to run, worked out

Dye-sub prints cost the same whatever the picture: about 42c each from the refill packs priced in my data. Ink and paper come together, so there's no cheap-paper lever to pull.
