Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-310 review

My verdictThe pigment version of the PRO-200S body. Pick it when you print on matte and fine-art paper, or when a print has to last.

Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-310 in detail

Why a pigment printer at 13 inches

Canon sells nine pigment inks plus a Chroma Optimizer here. Pigment sits on top of the paper instead of soaking into the coating, which is why it holds up better to light and why it looks good on matte and textured stock. The listing also calls out a dedicated matte black for deeper blacks on matte papers.

If you’ve seen the PRO-300 in older roundups, the PRO-310 is the newer model in that slot, and the listings to buy from.

Same footprint as the PRO-200S

Dimensions and weight on the two listings are nearly identical, so a desk that holds one holds the other. That makes the buying question simple. Do you want dye (PRO-200S) or pigment (PRO-310)? Everything else about living with them is close.

Canon adds an anti-clogging system and skew correction here, and the listing shows custom paper lengths up to 129 inches, which is worth knowing if you make long panoramic prints.

The cost of keeping prints for decades

Pigment cartridges aren’t cheap, and the Chroma Optimizer is one more consumable. The planning figure on this site is about $0.0100 of ink per square inch, a bit lower than the dye model’s. It is still a cartridge printer. If you print 13 x 19 often, cost per sheet adds up fast.

Choosing a 13-inch Canon

The 13-inch Canons sort out easily. Dye is the PRO-200S, pigment is the PRO-310, and the older PRO-200 and PRO-300 are the generation before. The PRO-310 listing scores 4.3 against the PRO-200S’s 4.1, though on a smaller sample.

Ink, in relative terms

Canon’s PFI-5100 10-color pack costs roughly a quarter of what the printer does on the listings I pulled, which is a sensible way to think about first-year ink. The pack I found is labeled compatible with the PRO-310; check Canon’s own compatibility table before you order, because several listings use the word ‘compatible’ loosely.

The catches

  • Smaller review sample than most printers here, 118 ratings on the listing when the data was pulled, so one bad batch moves the average.
  • Print only, like the PRO-200S.
  • Glossy prints from pigment look good, but dye still wins for pure color punch.

Can it print panoramas?

The listing shows custom paper lengths up to 129 inches.

How many inks does the PRO-310 use?

Canon lists nine pigment inks plus a Chroma Optimizer, which is why the pack is a 10-color pack.
